Orchard Walk – Saturday, August 9th at 1pm

Tour an eco-friendly suburban garden in La Grange, hosted by Veronica T. The garden is only 3 years old, so you can see what the fruit looks like at a young age, giving you an idea of what to expect in the near-term. She’s growing peaches, almonds, sour and sweet cherries, raspberries, strawberries, kiwi berries, currants, grapes, and pawpaws. The property also has 10 raised bed garden boxes for additional fruits & vegetables, all constructed for longevity. They are made out of either coated steel or Brazilian Ipe (the same wood used on the Millenium Park boardwalk) and should last 20 years or more. She also installed the garden bed irrigation and will give a short demo on how to set up your own.

The house was designed to be green as well. It’s an all-electric house with a green roof, solar panels, and sustainable materials for siding. She has no grass, opting for 3 different ground covers instead and the beginings of a rain garden over a water retention system. The entire south side of the house is lined with windows for an indoor garden, with outlets in the ceiling to hang grow lights in the winter.
